So true. I had the same experience. Only when I found a psychologist that knew about trauma and that I got to know the work of Deb Danna, I realized that there wasn't anything wrong with me. It's just my body doing what it is designed for. And then I learned, bit by bit, how to make sure that I felt safe and gained my freedom back.
Such a brilliantly written article! You connect the dots perfectly! 👍
Before reading the entire article my mind was reacting: "not just safety, but security!" And there you spike it in the latter part of your essay!
I try to help people understand the difference. Safety is a feeling of there being no threats near you in a certain proximal time and place/space. It has a time and place limitation. Security is a feeling of impenetrable safety at all times and places/space. It is a secure feeling that no matter what may come, no matter when, it won't "get me" because me and my defenders will always protect me.
People who have grown up as children being secure in their family are indeed fortunate.
As adults we build a network of such people in our lives to help us in this way. Thankfully they generally do their best.
I didn't notice on you bio or posts if you have an active faith component in your life. I comment on this because while people can provide a certain level of security in life, ultimately trusting in a supernatural guarantor of ourselves, our lives, and our loved ones, becomes critically necessary at times when people or institutions fail us. So, if you have not nurtured a faith component in your life I humbly suggest that you consider it. Look into whatever accessible Christian faith groups you may have near you and perhaps find one that "fits" you. It will pay you immense dividends as you journey forward in life.
Peace and Blessings to you and your loved ones for a healthy and happy New Year!
Perfectly true words Amanda, it felt like you were talking to me over a cuppa. 😊
